Lace, Clay & Memory – A Ceramic Story
I wanted to share something close to my heart from the Colour Clouds studio. Lately, I’ve been exploring a creative process that weaves together memory, texture, and tradition to create contemporary ceramic pieces.
There’s something tender and powerful about the detail of a handmade lace doily. We once would have cherished these, displaying them on sideboards, tea trays, and dressers. Our Sunday best displays may have disappeared and all the doilies put into cupboards - I know I have a huge collection.
But what if we could honour their history in a new, lasting form?
It’s more than just a surface pattern. It’s a way of honouring women’s domestic craft, and what was once considered ‘feminine hobby work’ into the realm of fine art and modern design. Each ceramic piece becomes a conversation between past and present—clay and thread—fragility and permanence. Each piece is unique and handmade right here in Newcastle.
