Charlestown Square should be the heartland for Lake Macquarie, a meeting place to celebrate the heritage, diversity and future of the region.
Charlestown Square should be the regional centre for community activities, entertaining, socialising and shopping.

Background

In December 2007, Lake Macquarie City Council approved the development of The GPT Group’s Charlestown Square. The project seeks to revitalise the local region and assist in enhancing local economic growth.

The $470 million development will see the Centre increase to approximately 88,000sqm and incorporate enhanced fresh food and convenience, fashion, entertainment and dining opportunities.

As part of the development of Charlestown Square, GPT has also delivered a suite of new community facilities including a state of the art lawn bowling club, new football fields and a new childcare facility.
A new youth and community centre will also be delivered later in the year.

Upon completion, the new Charlestown Square will feature Myer, Target, Big W, Coles, Woolworths, 280 specialty stores, five mini majors (Best & Less, Rebel Sport, JB Hi-Fi, City Beach and Strike Bowling Bar), a new food court and an entertainment, leisure and dining precinct including an eight screen Reading Cinemas complex and a variety of restaurants and cafes.

Key features of the development

Fresh Food and Convenience Market

On 27 August 2010 Charlestown Square will celebrate the opening of the Centre’s new Fresh Food and Convenience Market. Located on the Ground Floor, the Market features more than 40 fresh food and convenience retailers. Two full line supermarkets also feature with Coles and Woolworths almost doubling the size of their previous Charlestown Square stores.

The Fresh Food and Convenience Market is a one-stop destination for all your fresh food and service needs, conveniently laid out in a marketplace design.

North Piazza
A new civic piazza and café precinct is designed to deliver an active and inclusive community meeting place on the corner of Pearson and Ridley Streets.

South Piazza
Opening later this year, the corner of Pearson and Frederick Streets, will be transformed into an entertainment, leisure and dining destination – the South Piazza - featuring an eight screen Reading Cinemas complex (including 2 gold lounge cinemas), gym, youth and community centre and variety of cafes and restaurants.

Pearson St Upgrade
Presenting an enhanced pedestrian environment, Pearson Street will feature wider footpaths and better access to public transport and connectivity between Charlestown Square and the CBD. Slow moving traffic will be reintroduced to Pearson Street to activate the space and an upgrade to amenities and landscaping will provide trees for shade and locations to rest and people watch.
